Dao Yulan (陶玉蘭, Đào Ngọc Lân, Chinese spelling variation of Lanny Dao) is one of the most notorious members of the board of directors of Xencorp. He  was initially the Bat Ranger (a persona inspired from Batman), who conceived and brought together the first incarnation of what would later become the fighting force known as the Clear Wind Raisers (referenced from Power Rangers). Later he relinquished the Bat Morpher to another warrior, who would carry on the Raisers' work, as Yulan opted for a different Raiser form.

Now he is the Jadedaomon Nalion, otherwise known as the "Sleeping Dragon" or the "Nightwyvern," although typically he is referred to simply as "the Ninja" or "the Dragon;" Shiraga no Akuma, the "White Haired Demon," or simply "Shura."

Although a key member of the Power Rangers and a formidable warrior of his own right, he acts mainly as weapons designer and support.

Note that the roles of "weapons designer" and "support" are far more than implied; as weapons designer he is access to ALL weapons in the Rangers' arsenal, combined with his own custom-made weapons.

Background[]

Beginning of a Career[]

War of Two Cities[]

Journey to the Past[]

In an effort to study the ways of the fist and the sword like the masters of old, Dao Yulan uses experimental time displacement technology to transport himself to the past where he can devote all his time to this endeavor without worldly burdens. All the while, he is aware if he dies in the past before he can make it to this present point in time, his life will terminate in this closed loop and there would be no second chances.

First Family[]

In the past, the plan seemingly goes awry since he ends up in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, with little to no resources. While wandering he comes across a village. The farmers mistake him for a bandit and chase him off, but he takes residence in the forest nearby. One of the families takes pity on him and the matriarch often leaves some food and supplies for him at the edge of the forest. At one point, some of the boys take off hunting and are attacked by tiger. They are saved when Yulan intervenes and stares the tiger down. He delivers the boys back safely to their homes after tending to their injuries before leaving without a word. The village hails him as a hero and the elders formally invite him to stay in their village. Ostensibly the tale if told would sound like those mysterious, stoic heroes but: 1) He won't talk because he can't speak the local language. 2) He knows enough modern survival to stay alive in the forest. 3) He knows about behavior of tigers. 4) He uses modern first aid techniques to patch up wounds.

The Master[]

Somehow, this attracts the attention of a local wulin master who lives nearby, known as the "Quanshen" because he hides his face with the mask of a dog. Curious at the rumors of this mysterious "mute" young man who seemed to know far more than he let on, the master observed him from a distance for a time. Around this time, the soldiers of Qin were waging a war of conquest against the nearby states, and eventually came to Yulan's village. To Quanshen's surprise, Yulan appears to know beforehand about the incoming threat, and witnesses him dispatch a patrol using traps and weapons of never seen before design, but crafted and forged with the village's meager resources. Eventually, the army arrives and razes the entire village to the ground. Unable to save his adopted family, Yulan is forced to leave them to die and flees. Quanshen tracks Yulan down and attacks him. Yulan puts up a fierce fight but is outmatched but manages to slash Quanshen across the back of his thigh. Impressed and outraged by Yulan's fortitude, Quanshen demands to know why Yulan would rather run than die with his family like a man, to which he is met with cold silence. Misunderstanding Yulan's intent, Quanshen takes him in to train him for the fateful day he would take revenge on the reigning emperor of Qin.

The Assassination[]

Yulan trains with Quanshen for at least sixteen years and learns the language. Quanshen reveals that he intends to have Yulan along with nine other assassins kill the Qin emperor, a plot which was sponsored by several high ranking members of royalty from the other states. The ten assassins breach the palace walls and make it into the inner court, but are intercepted when one of the princes betrays the secret alliance and leaks the plot to the emperor. Only Yulan escapes alive, since he had known long since that it would be impossible to kill the Qin emperor. Furious, Quanshen demands an explanation from Yulan, who refuses to answer. Master and student are then forced to become fugitives as the emperor's army closes in. A bare year later, they are discovered but to Yulan's surprise, Quanshen sacrifices himself so that the former can escape. Quanshen also instructs Yulan to hide his family and never contact them again, so as to prevent them from being traced. Althogh Yulan attempts to rescue Quanshen, he is unable to find a vulnerability in the emperor's security and thus is forced to witness his master be beaten to death by the crown prince as a test by his father, and finally executed by beheading. The emperor does not have Quanshen's dog mask removed so that the latter can "die like the dog he is." Quanshen's body is finally dumped with mounds of dead civilians and soldiers from the war.

Yulan recovers Quanshen's body and head and removes the latter's mask, and to his shock finds out Quanshen looks just like him; in essence, his ancestor.

In the years to come, Yulan would at times adopt a dog-masked persona called the "Inugami," in honor of his first master.

For his own developed family, he will meet a woman known as "Moon Orchid" who looks stunningly similar to the physician who is his love interest back in his present day, but that's a story for another time.

Appearance[]

Dao Yulan arrived from the future in his twenties to master the ways of the sword.

He sports a mini high ponytail with bangs that hang in his face, the result of formerly short hair that has been left uncut for so long. You may notice his right eye sometimes flash red and green, and his left eye sometimes turn pure black as though it were sucking in the light around it.

He dons a Japanese-styled overcoat with wide sleeves (dark purple to the point of almost black) and silvery embroidering in the shape of a dragon on the back. Under this is a white cross-tie (the y shaped thing Chinese shirts use) tunic, and under that is skintight black body armor.

On his forearms he wears kote. For legwear, he has on baggy pants with boots wrapped in binding.

Finally for weapons (though of course he won't pull out any of them): he has a long nodachi strapped to his back. It has a white handle and sheath. Its guard is a lotus design. Also on his back, arrayed to look like "wings" (if that makes any sense) are two sabers. One seems to be cloaked in ragged black cloth and ripples even if there is no wind, and the other is resembles a folded kite.
